THE MOSAIC PROJECT!!!

Parents!! The students are doing a wonderful job on their mosaics in social studies class. I am so pleased with their progress and how well each group is working hard to bring their picture to life! On Monday the students finished up their mosaic draft. Tuesday they begin coloring macaroni, rice, pinto beans, spaghetti, broken CD cases, beads, rocks, glass, and just a variety of things. The rest of our time will be spent in the LAB, while working with various food colors, watercolors, acrylic paints, tile scorers, glue, etc. I should have the foundation boards ready for students to start painting and gluing down small pieces by Thursday. They are really excited about completing this project and it shows. I think this will be a piece they will never forget!! I know I won’t!!!

I will continue to keep you posted with our progress and/or any changes. Right now - The projected due date to have “Mosaics Around The World” complete is: Friday May 9th. This will give all projects time to dry over the weekend and be ready to present to the class on Monday May 12th.

Thanks in advance for helping them with any purchases towards doing this project. We really appreciate it!!

Ms. Lofties ☺

MONDAY – TLW: Introduce the Mosaic Project!!! Students will design and create their very own Mosaic by working in 6 collaborative groups. Students will glue small pieces of colored materials/objects onto a smooth surface creating a realistic picture of interest from China, India, Rome, Egypt, Mesopotamia, or Memphis. Students are encouraged to choose their subject wisely in an effort to make the mosaic look great while using their creative imaginations.

TUESDAY – TLW: - Class will collaborate with the Art teacher (Mr. Gordon) to get a framework for designing and creating an actual mosaic. Students will be assigned their perspective area of design and should start brainstorming which items/small objects they want to use and bring in.

WEDNESDAY –TLW: Students will pair off inside their groups to search for pictures via Internet to used in the mosaic creation. Students are encouraged to choose a simple but symbolic picture of the area they are assigned to represent. HW: Bring in items/objects for Mosaic creation.

THURSDAY – TLW: Begin rough draft sketch or outline of chosen mosaic design. HW: Bring in items/objects for Mosaic creation.

FRIDAY – TLW: Finish the outline drawing of the chosen mosaic! Student’s progress will be checked for a grade at this point! Students should also begin discussing the way they want to color any objects needed for this project. For example: food coloring or paint? Will the group require a strainer to accomplish this task, etc. HW: Bring in items/objects for Mosaic creation.

Parents-Germantown Middle School does not allow students to chew gum. However, students are ignoring this rule more and more each day, without regard. Each student has been reminded of this rule and warned excessively. As a result, after school detentions will now be automatically issued to any (6A) student caught chewing, effective immediately. Failure to serve an assigned after school detention, will result in further disciplinary actions. Please talk with your child about the consequences for not complying with this rule.
